Can’t-miss 2017 summer events in San Francisco
San Francisco is an ideal vacation destination with gourmet cuisine, an eclectic culture, and a never-ending list of attractions and landmarks to visit. Of course another fun reason to visit the Bay Area is for the events hosted in San Francisco. If you’re thinking of a summer getaway, then you’ll want to plan your San Francisco vacation around these can’t-miss events!
50th Summer of Love
In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, a lineup of free concerts and the celebration of flower power in Golden Gate Park was scheduled for early June. Unfortunately, the permit was denied by the San Francisco Park Commission though some bands have still committed to playing on the original date so the show might still go on.
Officially, organizers have announced they’re applying for a new permit for a September or October event and you can stay updated on their website. If the event is green-lit, come to San Francisco to revel in the spirit of free love, retro fashion, and fun from the late 1960s.
Beyond the concert event, restaurants, shops, museums, and entertainment venues in the city are commemorating Summer of Love with décor and special events too. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect summer to visit San Francisco this may well be it as we honor peace, love, and music this year.
41st Annual Union Street Music Festival
On June 3 and 4, take in the sounds of music along Union Street at this fun, annual festival. This year, the festival is expanding its musical selection to offer five different genres: Jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, and performances by local bands. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and you should stop by the beverage gardens for full pours of beer and wine!
Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
Most visitors to San Francisco are trying to make their way toward Alcatraz but on June 11, you’ll see plenty of athletes escaping from there during the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon! If you haven’t been training that doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy the fun of the triathlon as during the race you can watch from the Marina Green for the swimming portion or station yourself along Marina Boulevard to watch the biking and running portions. During the race, you can also attend the free Fitness Festival and Expo and check out the activities, merchandise, get some concessions, or visit the beer garden before cheering on the racers at the finish line.
North Beach Festival
Come join the fun and festivities at the 63rd Annual North Beach Festival, June 17 – 18! This free event is in the heart of San Francisco’s Little Italy and features gourmet food booths, Italian street painting, arts and crafts vendors, and the blessing of the animals at The National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and is a San Francisco tradition you shouldn’t miss!
Gear up for San Francisco Pride with Frameline41, the 41st San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival, from June 15 – 25. The festival showcases films that portray and celebrate LGBTQ stories and identities. The festival schedule will be available online on May 23.

This event typically draws over a million people to the city for the weekend and is one of the most well-known Pride events around the globe.
Now in its 80th season, the Stern Grove Festival hosts free concerts in the park throughout the summer months. The concerts are held on Sundays, June 25 – August 27, in Sigmund Stern Grove, 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard, and begin at 2 p.m. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis so if you find a performance you really want to see it’s recommended to get there plenty early.
