4 Reasons to Visit Umbrella Alley San Francisco

For a fun day in the city, visit Umbrella Alley San Francisco. This interactive mural exhibit is a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike with its brightly-colored walls, walkways, and umbrella ceiling. So, grab your camera, family, and friends for a visit to one of the most talked-about places in the city.

Look up at the umbrella and ballon ceilings

Perhaps one of the more unique features of the Umbrella Alley San Francisco is the display of hanging umbrellas and balloons from above. Creating a canopy of color in the alley and inside the warehouse (yes it’s more than just an alley), it’s enough to cheer up anyone’s day!

Great photo opportunities

The alleyway is full of photo opportunities almost everywhere you look. There’s the Fisherman’s Wharf crabby Fnnch honey bear, a colorful butterfly, a smattering of pink and red and white hearts, the famous “greetings from San Francisco” sign, and so much more. All the murals were created to showcase the beauty of San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf, and California.

Many of the pieces are interactive with places for you to be a part of the mural itself. Turn yourself into a butterfly, or grab onto a floating balloon in the sky or hold onto an umbrella while dancing in the rain. Be sure to also look down while you walk along the brightly colored ground painted with the rays of the rainbow.

Support local artists

Born out of the need to promote local tourism and the arts community in San Francisco at the beginning of the pandemic, Umbrella Alley is a great way to support local artists and community. The murals celebrate and promote the hard-hit travel and hospitality industry and were painted during the 18-month shutdown. One of the best ways to promote and support is by visiting, taking photos, and sharing on social media with #umbrellaalleysf – giving credit to the artists. While it is free to visit, they ask for a $5 donation for the artists and the upkeep.

How to find Umbrella Alley San Francisco

Umbrella Alley is located at the west end of Fisherman’s Wharf, near Ghiradelli Square. The exact address is 757 Beach St. While getting there can be a little tricky, once in the area it is hard to miss with its vibrant colors and crowds. Note, there are no parking facilities at the location, so public transportation is your best bet. The Hyde Street Cable Car turnaround is across the street.
