All You Need to Know About the Mission Dolores

Due to its long history as the oldest building in San Francisco, the Mission Dolores is one of the top things to do in the Mission District. But there is much more to this iconic San Francisco building than meets the eye. Home to one of San Francisco’s most prized rose gardens, a rare art collection, and a signing choir, the Mission Dolores should be at the top of any visitor’s list!

Here’s all you need to know about the Mission Dolores.

History of the Mission Dolores

The original adobe mission was established in 1776 by the Franciscan order and was originally named, Mission San Francisco de Asis. The strong building has withstood many hardships over the years, from the Mexican War of Independence to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It’s strong will and testament to its strong roots and historical importance to this city is something to be admired when visiting.

The Mission Dolores Mural

While the Mission District itself is home to many painted murals throughout the neighborhood, the Mission Dolores Mural is more a “secret” mural that is one of the more popular attractions at the Mission. Thought to be the first wall painting of its kind in the Bay Area, the mural was painted by Native Americans in the 18th century.

Gardens and cemeteries

While there is plenty to see inside, there is also plenty to enjoy outside as well. Visitors enjoy a walk around the rose garden, adjacent to the Mission. The garden contains similar types of plants that were present in the 18th century and includes an Indian botanic garden that contains Native American plants and artifacts.

The cemetery itself is a historical tribute to those who contributed to the life of Mission Dolores with graves dating back to 1830 and burial sites of the founders of the mission. More than 5,000 people have been buried at the Mission and it remains as one of few proper cemeteries in San Francisco.

Basilica Choir

A dedicated group of volunteers makes up the singing voices of the Basilica Choir. The choir can be heard every Sunday at 10 a.m. and on major feasts and holy days. In addition, the choir performs at annual Christmas concerts and Spring concerts. The award-winning Basilica Choir is a true treat to hear.
