San Francisco Neighborhoods to Visit

San Francisco views

The Bay Area is comprised of many different neighborhoods, each with its own distinct flair and character. To get a real flavor of what San Francisco is all about, we suggest visiting these San Francisco neighborhoods during your stay at the Inn San Francisco and seeing what all of San Francisco is about.

Haight Ashbury

Made popular by its role as the epicenter of the 1960s hippie movement, the Haight Ashbury neighborhood was a huge component of the “Summer of Love” era and much of modern American counterculture. The neighborhood still draws people in today with its colorful buildings, vintage record stores, and boutiques, plus plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained and fed.

Nob Hill

A bit more on the uppity-up, with both its steep hills and upscale restaurants, Nob Hill has made a name for itself with old San Francisco money. A collection of luxury hotels and fine dining offers a bit of high-class look and feel to this affluent neighborhood. Notable landmarks to see include the Grace Cathedral, the Huntington Park, and hitching a ride on the cable car downtown.

Mission District

When you book your stay at the Inn San Francisco, you are staying in the heart of the Mission District. As one of San Francisco’s most colorful neighborhoods with its beautiful street art, rich history, and culturally diverse locals, it’s no wonder it’s one of the more popular San Francisco neighborhoods to visit. Notable stops include the Mission Dolores, Clarion Alley (for murals), Mission Dolores Park, and authentic street food vendors for a culinary experience unlike any other.

North Beach

Claimed as San Francisco’s “Little Italy,” North Beach is found sandwiched between Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown. With café-filled sidewalks, gelato shops, and Italian eateries, you can’t help but feel like you’ve escaped to another country. Some of the best views of the city are seen from North Beach’s most popular spots, Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill.

SoMa

South of Market, or rather SoMa, is the home base for many of San Francisco’s museums, such as the SF Museum of Modern Art and Children’s Creativity Museum, home of the SF Giants, several tech companies, and Oracle Park.

Castro

The vibrant, bustling streets of Castro come alive with its historical past. A historically LGBTQ neighborhood, the Castro district was home to the late gay-rights activist Harvey Milk and has hosted hundreds of protests in name of gay rights since the 1960s. The most notable landmark is the Castro Theatre with a plethora of bars and restaurants that make a visit well worth the stop.

Pacific Heights

More commonly referred to as Pac Heights, the neighborhood of Pacific Heights is often referred to as one of San Francisco’s most expensive neighborhoods. A quick stroll down Fillmore Street reveals plenty of shopping, dining, and high-end restaurants in this posh neighborhood. Enjoy a gentle reprieve from the busy streets of downtown and take in city views from Alta Plaza and Lafayette Park.

Russian Hill

A list of San Francisco neighborhoods to visit wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Russian Hill. Best known for Lombard Street, or the “crookedest street in the world” Russian Hill offers much more to see and do. Gain some of the best views of the city from the neighborhood’s steep hills, with a happening nightlife along Polk Street. And for those hot afternoons, grab a spot in line at Swensen’s Ice Cream parlor.
