Put a little spring in your step and discover where to see cherry blossoms in San Francisco.

About the Cherry Blossom

The Cherry Blossom tree we know and love here in the U.S. is a hybrid from Japan, known in the botanical world as the Yoshino cherry. It was first introduced in the U.S. in the early 20th century, with one of the best-known collections in Washington D.C. These cherry blossoms were a gift from Tokyo, Japan in 1912 and are the cornerstone to so many other locations in the U.S. that feature these beautiful blooms.

Why are cherry blossoms so popular? Perhaps it’s the fragrance it gives off early spring or its beautiful glossy bark that adds to the attractiveness of the tree’s blooms. Growing up to 40 feet, these trees make their presence known amongst its admirers.

Japanese Tea Garden

Located inside the Golden Gate State Park, the Japanese Tea Garden is one of the most popular places to see cherry blossoms in San Francisco. As the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the U.S., the five-acre garden is filled with beautiful blooms and ancient trees. In addition to the cherry blossoms, visitors can view the arched drum bridge, stone lanterns, koi ponds, a Zen garden, and the colorful tulips at the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden.

San Francisco Botanical Gardens

Next to the Japanese Tea Garden, is the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. Spanning 55 acres, the gardens are home to over 8,000 kinds of plants, trees, and flowers. The best collection of cherry blossoms can be found within the Jean Wolfe White Garden. In addition to the cherry blossoms, other colorful blooms that fill the gardens include the magnificent magnolias and tulips.

Japantown

Of course, Japantown is one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in San Francisco. This is where the annual Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year and is the home to many streets lined with colorful cherry trees. The Japantown Peace Plaza is a great place to start to see the cherry blossoms.

Note: The 2021 festival will be hosted virtually.
